This summer, Middlesex Community College is offering an exciting line-up of College for Kids programs starting on Monday, July 13. From arts and crafts to music and theatre, kids ages 8 to 17 have many opportunities for hands-on learning and fun, including the new class Play Production: The Story of the Revolutionary War.
“The Play Production: The Story of the Revolutionary War is a fun and engaging way for students to step into history during the 250th anniversary of our nation,” said Colleen Morrison, instructor for the course. “Campers will help shape the production, bringing the story to life through creativity, teamwork and performance. It’s exciting to watch them grow in confidence while learning about the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. Audiences can expect a lively, student-driven performance full of energy and heart.”
Running the week of August 3, the play program is open to kids ages 10 to 17. Students have the chance to write character lines, design simple costumes and props, and learn and rehearse their scenes. At the end of the week, they will perform for their families.
The week of July 27, students ages 12 to 16 can take the course Calling All Tortured Poets – Are You Ready for It? Dive into the Life of a Showgirl this Summer. Focusing on the music of Taylor Swift, students will analyze the poetry behind her music to use the same techniques in their own writing.
In the new Creative Crafts class, students ages 10 to 15 will dive into arts and crafts. From pompom rugs, self-portraits, under the sea pictures, bejeweled masks to wish bracelets this program offers a relaxed setting to create original items using a variety of materials. The class will run the week of August 3.
A returning favorite, the Cakes and Cupcakes course has openings during the weeks of July 20 and August 3. Students ages 10 to 15 will learn cake and cupcake decorating tips and go home with their designs each day.
“In Cakes and Cupcakes, students will learn hands-on cake decorating skills using professional tools like piping bags, decorating tips, and even an airbrush machine,” said Tara Savino, instructor for the course. “They’ll practice frosting techniques and creative design while making projects such as an 8-inch 3D cheeseburger cake, a summer-themed cake, trending cupcake designs, and a pull-apart cupcake cake. Each day, they’ll bring home a unique, fully decorated creation they can be proud of. The experience builds confidence, creativity, and real decorating know-how in a fun and supportive environment.”
Taught by public school teachers and expert professionals, MCC’s College for Kids programs also include STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), aviation, photography, fashion design, online gaming and game design, filmmaking, and fitness.
Programs are offered in Bedford, featuring five weeks of full- and half-day programs from July 13 to August 13, Monday through Thursday. Full-day programs run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and half-day programs run 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students who take two half-day programs to make a full day can stay on campus for lunch in between the two sessions.
