For Joao Da Silva Pacheco, of Lowell, his experience at Middlesex Community College has been one of support. From the start, Middlesex offered him a convenient location and a variety of options in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The combination of being able to explore his interest in biology, receive guidance from the community, and take on challenging opportunities at MCC is helping him build his future.
“My overall experience at MCC has been amazing,” Pacheco said. “From day one, I’ve felt supported by faculty and students who cared about my success. MCC has provided the support and guidance that I needed to grow academically and personally, setting me on a path toward success.”
Interested in working in a STEM-field, Pacheco first wanted to pursue radiologic technology. As he completed his pre-requisite courses, he started growing more curious about how biology works. Talking to a biology professor about the field provided informative answers and the inspiration that led him to decide on his program of study.
In his STEM classes, Pacheco appreciates professors sharing their knowledge and giving advice as he figures out his next steps. He also enjoys researching complex scientific concepts. Learning through hands-on experiences, he investigates important questions by performing tasks such as observing cells and studying plants.
“The program allows you to explore the invisible world, showing structures and organisms that can only be seen through a microscope,” Pacheco said. “The professors are great. They are here not only teaching in the classroom, but they are also advisors who are guiding me throughout my academic journey. I have had exceptional STEM professors who consistently demonstrate knowledge and genuine support for their students.”
Pacheco also found a community of support in his classmates. In and outside of the classroom, he builds connections with peers who provide different perspectives. Being active on campus also allows Pacheco to strengthen his personal development by networking and honing his communication and listening skills.
One of these meaningful experiences is being a member of the LatinX Force Club, which he learned about during his First Year Experience course the summer prior to starting at Middlesex. Before the beginning of his first semester, Pacheco was able to get involved in the club, meet friends, and get familiar with the campus. This helped him feel more comfortable and confident as he continued his college journey.
“Being active on campus helped me learn more about myself,” Pacheco said. “I was not a social guy, but once I began my journey at MCC, I felt welcomed and supported. This environment gave me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and start learning from others. I believe that these interactions have increased my understanding about myself and my community.”
After he graduates from Middlesex, Pacheco plans to continue his education to earn a bachelor’s degree. As he looks toward the future, he feels empowered to explore different options in both a transfer institution and career opportunities. By providing him with a strong foundation, he believes his education from MCC is playing a crucial role in his development.
“These experiences have significantly supported my personal growth and contributed to my academic success,” he said. “Thanks to MCC, I feel confident that I am in the right place to learn, thrive and achieve my goals.”
