Middlesex provided Jodi with a variety of hands-on experiences to help her rediscover a passion for STEM. In 2022, she received the Station 1 Frontiers Fellowship with MIT in which she completed coursework and research while interning at a partner company. Graduating with highest honors, she received the Engineering Science Program Award and plans to transfer to UMass Lowell to major in mechanical engineering and minor in physics.

“I always wanted to be able to contribute meaningfully to the world, but I wasn’t quite sure which way to do that. I love working hands-on, being in a lab, problem-solving, and being challenged by things Middlesex has become my foundation. It has opened up so many doors for me in such a short amount of time and has shown me that the sky is the limit."

I learned the power of community, consistency, and showing up even when things feel impossible. I realized that leadership is not about having a title, it is about using your experiences to lift others up. And I discovered that belonging is not something you find, it is something you help create, for yourself and for the people around you.”

Nisa Rivera headshot

Nisa Rivera
Criminal & Social Justice
Lowell

A first-generation student, Nisa started at MCC in the dual enrollment program. Continuing at Middlesex after finishing high school, she found a community that fostered her growth and provided opportunities in and outside of the classroom. In addition to supportive professors, she enjoyed the small class sizes and learning from different perspectives. Nisa transferred to Suffolk University and graduates with a bachelor’s degree this month. Hoping to pursue a career in public policy or sociology, she wants to combat injustices within the criminal justice system.

“My education at MCC served as a helpful transition to higher education in general. I think if I had immediately started out in a four-year university I would have struggled more without the support that I had and it has also allowed me to grow into myself both personally and professionally."
